Zend framework vs … cakephp
I recently read about “Zend framework being released”. So here are my 2ct:
4 weeks ago i had to decide on a php-framework for a project i needed to get up and running in a single week. As always, i called my personal php-guru and asked him for advise. He directed me to
Zend framework
Very impressive features. La_a_aa_arge documentation. Download size 18MB. Tried to get a demo to run. Failed. Pushed it back on my desk.
Did a bit more research … stumbled over cakephp ( i had read about it on the amfphp website):
cakephp (1.1.x)
Download size is 360KB!! Features ok, Dokumentation ok. Demo worked after 5min.
Now after 5 weeks of development in cake, i still like it. Sure you don’t have Zend behind it, sure you don’t have everything integrated (1.2 has important features to come), but it has a reasonable learning curve and i could integrate missing features quite easily. So for me – doing mostly small to medium-size php projects – it is perfect.
Things to check for cake:

- the bakery with lots of addons and symple code
PS: no, i won’t give you that number. it is my personal guru.
